plants under the tree

Question
We have a little leaf linden tree in our yard.  We've tried planting a variety of plants under this tree but many have died over the last few years.  Is there something about this type of tree that would prohibit perennials growing?  We've had several different types of plants (foxglove, balloon plant, etc.) which have died off.  If this is not the case, can you recommend plants more viable?  This planting bed is southern exposure in Wisconsin. Thank you.

Answer
Hi Jean,

Thanx for your question.  I didn't find anything to indicate that the Little Leaf Linden (Tilia cordata) was an allelopath.  The two plants you mentioned having grown underneath the tree require more sunlight in your Wisconsin climate than they do farther south which may have been the reason they did not do well underneath the linden.  Try ferns, hostas, wood poppy, columbines, lily-of-the-valley and lungwort.  I hope this helps.
Tom
