QuestionI have had a large calla lilly in a large pot for at least the last 10-12 years and it has always bloomed around the first of July. The blooms are huge and usually number 10-12 blooms and they are bright yellow. This year, I have not had any blooms. We had a pretty hard winter for the Pacific NW; could this have affected this year's blooms? The pot has always been left outside through the winter and I usually plant over the top or around the dormant bulbs.
AnswerHi Tawnya,
Thanx for your question. If the plant is only growing foliage, wait a little bit longer, it just may be blooming later this year because of the hard winter you indicated in your question. If it hasn't bloomed by mid-August, allow the plant to continue growing until it goes dormant in the fall then dig it up. You may need to separate the rhizomes after 10-12 years. When the rhizomes become too crowded this will cause a reduction or complete absence in blooming. You can replant the other rhizomes in separate pots or give them a way to friends. I hope this helps.
