QuestionI have a clematis which is about 4 years old and never bloomed. I have another one planted beside it and it blooms, this is newer. The original one, I have lost the tag for it so I don't know the pruning type. Right now it is full of foliage over the arbor. In the past I have pruned it back in the winter but this last winter I left the vines and it shot from there. I thought I might find the leaf on the internet but to no avail. The leaf from the stem is rounded for 1 1/2 inch, goes in and then up for up for 1/2 inch, goes in and then up for one inch. I am an avid gardener, living near Vancouver BC, zone 5 and would sure like to know what to do. I'm stumped.
AnswerHi Jacquie,
Thanx for your question. I would let the vine continue to grow and not prune anything. It may be a late bloomer. Also, feed your plant a low nitrogen fertilizer such as a 5-10-10. Typically, rose food is good for clematis. Mulch the roots to keep them cool. Clematis like cool roots. Make sure your plant is getting at least 6 hours of full sun. I hope this helps.
