QuestionI have a red cala lily. what do i do with the huge pod?. can i keep this plant indoors or outdoors. i am in okinawa, japan. leaves are turning yellow. no blooms now and it is july, 2009. thank you.
AnswerHi Bobbie,
Thanx for your question. Okinawa has a subtropical climate and your calla lily will thrive outdoors in this climate. I think the huge pod you mentioned is the seed pod resulting after the flower wilted. If the leaves are turning yellow, the plant is going dormant. Cut off the pod and discard it unless you want to save the seeds bearing in mind that the seeds will not come true to the parent plant because you probably have a hybrid plant. You can keep the plant in the pot but with your climate, you can also plant it out in the yard. The plant is going dormant now so wait until the leaves are completely brown and then cut them off. Plant the rhizome in a place where the plant will get full sun. Side dress with well-composted cow manure. Water once a week if no regular rain. The plant will probably stay dormant about 3 months and then re-emerge with new green growth. I hope this helps.
