QuestionI bought a clematis last year which came back with excellent foliage and growth but no flowers. What should I do?
AnswerHi Mimi,
Thanx for your question. Does the vine get enough sun. If it is too shady, the plant will not bloom or not bloom much. It needs at least 6 hours of full sun per day. If you are fertilizing your vine, what are you using? Fertilizers that have a lot of nitrogen in them will cause all green growth and little or no flowering. Make sure you are using a good clematis food. Espoma Rose Tone is a food I see recommended but I have never used it myself. If your plant is near the lawn and the lawn is subject to a lot of lawn chemicals, the nitrogen in the lawn chemicals could be adversely affecting the clematis. Keep the roots cool with a good mulch of straw or leaves. Clematis like cool roots, especially if you're in a place with very warm or hot summers. Do yo know what type of clematis you have? It may be a late summer bloomer and has not bloomed yet. I hope this helps.
