QuestionJust HOW do I dead head the yellow day lilies that I grow by the fence? Your past letter to someone stated that the green 'bulb' should also be removed...do I cut it just below this 'bulb'? Thank you for your help.
AnswerHi Carol,
Thanx for your question. Thanx also for using the Search function. This saves us both a lot of time in getting right to the point of your question. Allow me to elaborate on the process of deadheading the daylily. The flowers are born on a long scape or stem. After each day, the flower wilts and closes up. You can pinch the flowers off at this time if you like. If you leave the flower on, a seed pod or as you defined it, a "green bulb" will form. The longer you allow the seed pod to mature, the more blooming will decrease and even stop in some cases. So, once the flowers are done, pinch off the spent flower or seed pod if there is one or, just cut the scape off a few inches above the crown of the plant. Either way is fine. I hope this helps.
