asian lily care - splitting?

Question
I have an asian lily that seems to need splitting as it has not grown as big the last two years as it did the previous 5 years.  It had been growing huge and full of blooms and this year it has dwindled and not many flowers.  Should I split it up and when is the best time to do that?  Thanks.

Answer
Hi Randy,
Thanx for your question.  Yes, it sounds like it's time to divide the Asian Lily.  Wait until September and cut back the stalks.  Dig up in a wide space so you don't injure any bulbs.  The bulbs will be 6-8 inches below the surface of the soil.  Pull them out carefully and the smaller ones will detach easily from the main bulbs.  You can detach the main bulbs from each other also.  The larger bulbs will bloom next year, the medium-sized ones the following and the baby bulbs take about 3 years.  Plant bulbs 6-12 inches apart.  I hope this helps.
Tom
