QuestionHello, I recently purchased a few Neoregelia Compacta. Some of them had a beautiful dark pink-reddish center. I have kept them in their pots, under filtered light to shade conditions. Others were in partial sun conditions. Lately, I have noticed that they have lost their coloring despite the lighting. Their leaves are only green now. Why is this and how can I get them to have the pink color in the center again?
Thanks for your advice,
Marie
AnswerHi Marie,
Thanx for your question. The bromeliad you describe is considered a houseplant and I do not have reliable experience as a house plant enthusiast. If you will go to Home/Garden and Click on Gardening and then Click on Houseplants, we have 3 experts here on Allexperts for houseplants. Unfortunately, two of them are maxed out on questions and one is on vacation until the end of the month. So, I'm going to try to answer your question and then you can check it with one of the experts later.
From what I have read in initial research, the when the plant begins to bloom the center will start to pick up color from pink to magenta or a brighter red but some are just pink and as the blooming subsides the colors revert back to green. I could be totally wrong.
In any event, here is a link to some bromeliad experts. One is in Florida:
http://fcbs.org/
The other is Bromeliad Society International -
http://www.bsi.org/
which has many members in the United States.
I hope this helps.
