QuestionI puchased a calla lily plant in May. I moved it to a permanent pot. It did very well for @ 1.5 months. Now the ends are starting to get brown on the flowers. I am new to calla lilies and plants in general. They are in part sun. The info sheet that came w/ it says its a sweet talk calla lily, but I am not sure. Thanks
AnswerHi Melissa,
Thanx for your question. The calla lily flower may be starting to wilt because it is finished blooming. The blooms will last a long time, such as several weeks but they will eventually turn brown and wilt like all spent blooms. After the bloom has turned brown, snip it off (you can do the whole stem) a few inches above the base of the plant. The foliage will last longer but it too will eventually wilt when it begins to go dormant. Some go dormant in a few weeks, others will last several months. Allow the leaves to turn brown while watering it say, once a week, no more than that. Do not feed. Once the leaves are completed wilted, you can remove them and then move the pot to a cool, dark, dry place for a couple months. At this point, the rhizome (root) has gone dormant and will "rest" for 2-3 months. When you see new growth starting to emerge, bring the pot back to an area that gets morning sun or partial sunlight. Keep it warm and keep it watered but well drained. It will bloom again. I hope this helps.
