lack of flowers

Question
I have several helleborus winter flowering plants that I have had for 2 years. I bought them as young plants, grow them on and then planted them outside.  All I have had is a lot of growth with plenty of leaves with no signs of any flower heads appearing.

Answer
Hi Paul,
Thanx for your question.  There are several things that could be causing this.  First, have you been fertilizing?  If you have, there is no need and if the fertilizer is high in nitrogen it will cause green growth at the expense of the blooms.  Although the hellebore will tolerate shade, it will not thrive in deep shade.  The third thing is maturity.  Like peonies, hellebores must be mature to flower and this could take up to 3 or 4 years.  Additionally, they resent being moved.  Once the roots are disturbed (ie transplanting), the plant is slow to bloom (maybe a season or two).  Give it another season and you should see blooms next February or March.  I hope this helps.
Tom
