Nelly Moser clematis

Question
QUESTION: I have a Nelly Moser that has taken over the lamppost in the front looks great. It in it's second year and it bloomed in May with huge flowers but they were at the bottom in a bunch and mid way up to the middle. Now it's June and the foliage has climbed like crazy but no more blooms. I'm in NJ Zone 6 it gets alot of sun but the roots are cool the flowers do get washed from the sun.

ANSWER: Hi Marc,
Thanx for your question.  Are you asking why the plant didn't bloom all the way up the vine?  Are you using fertilizer?  If your fertilizer has too much nitrogen in it, this will cause a flush of green growth and little to no blooming.  But, I think what is going on here is, the first flush of blooms comes from last year's growth so be careful about pruning too much.  Now that you have a new flush of growth you should get a second flush of flowers in mid-Summer.  The roots need to be kept cool so mulch them heavily with straw or cypress bark.  I hope this helps.

QUESTION: Yes Tom I was wondering why it did not bloom all through out the vines. I have been using Miracle Grow for Tomatoes because I heard from a few people that it works well. I am new to the Clematis so I appreciate all your help and any suggestions you may have Thank you.

Answer
Hi Marc,
Thanx for the additional information.  The Miracle Gro should be fine.  Rose food can also be used as can well-composted cow manure and a little bone meal.  I still think you will see a flush of blooming later on this summer.  As the plant becomes more mature, you will see a more consistent pattern of blooming.  Here are some resources you may find helpful.
