QuestionMy hydrangeas have produced beautifully for years and are mature trees (9ft.+). The problem is that pruning was never really whole-heartedly done and I find myself with tall trees, new growth up top, and lots of old growth below (sticks). Can I drastically prune back these trees to say 6ft. and have new on old growth established?
AnswerHi Richard,
Thanx for your question. Wait until after the hydrangeas have bloomed and then yes, you can drastically prune back the shrubs to 6 feet. This should give your shrubs enough time to grow out blooming buds for next year but also benefit from being drastically pruned. I hope this helps.
