bougainvillea tree

Question
Tom: We live in central Florida and had a freeze this past winter. The bougainvillea is growing new branches but no blossoms. Is it ruined and should be replaced? Thanks for your help.

Answer
Hi Robert,
Thanx for your question.  I go down to the Daytona Beach area about 3 times a year because my brother lives there.  I used to live in Ft. Walton Beach in the Panhandle many years ago.  Bought my first house there.  Anyway, your bougainvillea is fine if it is growing new blossoms.  Give it a chance to keep growing out.  Typically, a chance hard freeze will kill a bougainvillea down to the ground but the roots survive.  It takes the plant a bit of time to revive itself once the normal mild temperatures return.  I would apply a side dressing of well composted cow manure too or some fertilizer spikes rated for flowering shrubs.  You need fertilizer with the middle number higher than the others such at 10-15-10 or something like that which is for flowers and flowering shrubs.  Phosphorus is the middle number of the NPK ratings on fertilizer and you will need this higher because phosphorus is the element plants need for flowering.  Your plant will eventually start blooming again once it has fully recovered from the shock of the frost.  I hope this helps.
Tom
