QuestionHi Tom, I read your answer to Margaret's question regarding a kousa
dogwood. My kousa is also planted at a northwest exposure and didn't get
very many flowers this year. It was covered in flowers last year in mid June
(we planted it last year in mid-May). Will using the 0-10-10 fertilizer
produce more flowers next year? How often should we fertilize it? Can we
transplant the kousa to a more sunny area or is it too late? We really enjoyed
those flowers last year and are very disappointed not to see them this year.
Help! Thank you, Kolette Buffalo, NY
AnswerHi Kolette,
Thanx for your question. Dogwoods don't mind some shade and usually grow under taller trees but sometimes they can be too shaded. If the plant is completely shaded, I would move it this fall to a place where it will get some sun. You're in Buffalo so you're not going to have a problem with summer heat. With that said, yes, the 0-10-10 fertilizer will help your tree produce more flowers. I would give it a feeding now and maybe another in August. Don't feed in the fall or winter. In the early spring give it another feeding. This should help your Kousa bloom. I hope this helps.
Tom
