Daffodill Bulbs

Question
On Mothers day I received a lovely basket of Daffodils that have bloomed and are now just starting to to dry up. I want to know when I should plant them out doors.

Answer
Hi Lynn,
Thanx for your question.  You should plant the bulbs outdoors as soon as you can.  If the foliage is still green, do not cut it off.  It will continue to gather energy from the sun until it withers at which time you can cut it off.  Bear in mind please that many daffodils received as gifts are often "forced" at a large commercial greenhouse.  This means that the nurserymen have caused the plants to grow and flower artificially.  This often involves a huge expenditure of energy on the plant's part.  It also means that many plants will not survive this expenditure of energy.  Go ahead and plant the bulbs and hopefully, they'll come up and bloom next spring!  Plant them about 6 inches deep and sprinkle some bone meal in with the soil.  I hope this helps.
Tom
