QuestionI have many 5-6 feet tall Azaleas which have already bloomed this spring. I want to prune them back as far as I can without killing or hurting them. How far can we prune them down ? Thanks, Sue
AnswerHi Sue,
Thanx for your question. You may prune your azaleas rather severely and this is most effective for new, fuller growth rather than being a danger to them.
The correct time to do this is right before the shrubs would ordinarily flush out with new growth in the spring. Cut the stems cleanly with a sharp lopper or saw and do not fertilize. In a few short weeks new growth will abound.
In the future keep azaleas full by pruning a portion of the branches to the ground which forces foliage to emerge lower on the plant.
I hope this helps.
