Question
Lilac trees
We live in Zone 3. We have 15' lilac trees that surround our back yard making it very private. They are about 20 years old. I can't seem to find anything that will grow under the trees. There is about a 3-4'space between the trees and the start of the lawn. The back yard faces north. Do you have any suggestions?
AnswerHi Pat,
Thanx for your question. Have you tried hostas? They are hardy to zone three and come in a variety of shades and leaf designs. Many bloom long wands of white, pink or lavender flowers. Astilbe, daylilies and tall phlox would work also. It looks to me like there is some sun. If it is shaded a lot once the shrubs have filled in the tall phlox might not work. I hopet this helps.
