Azalea and Lilac

Question
What kind of Azalea will survive in Nashua? Also, have you heard of a "Josee" lilac--4-6' tall and blooms until autumn. Please advise.     Thank You very Much:  Vinny

Answer
Hi Vinny,
Thanx for your question.  Which Nashua or you talking about?  New Hampshire?  Iowa?  Missouri? Montana? Minnesota?  Let me know which one because it could make a difference.

Josee lilac is supposedly a rebloomer and is very hardy.  It should thrive in any of the above-mentioned states.  Springhill has it but it is a bit pricey so you might want to check local nurseries and the Internet for competitive pricing.

Here is a link to the Azalea Society of America.

There are azaleas that are hardy to Zone 4 which would include all the states shown above.  Deciduous azaleas (those that lose their leaves in the fall and winter) do not do well in places where there is hot, humid summers and they will gradually suffer, decline and die off.  If you are in New Hampshire, Iowa or Missouri, there is a wider choice of azaleas than one might find for Montana or Minnesota.  I would advise going to your local nurseries and inquiring for azaleas hardy to your area.  If you're in New Hampshire or Mass, try Salem, Andover, Chelmsford and Manchester area nurseries for azaleas rated hardy to your area.  But, let me know where you are and I'll see what kind of cultivars I kind find for you.

I hope this helps.
Tom
