Rubrum lily

Question
I just got a Rubrum lily in a pot and would love to keep it but have no idea how to care for it. Could you please help me with the basics like repotting because i would like to keep it indoors, what size pot( it has three plants on it), is moisture control soil the best, where to keep it and how often should I water it? Please and thank you.

Answer
Hi Jalieia,
Thanx for your question.  The rubrum lily needs to be planted outdoors as it is not ideally a houseplant.  Many are given as gifts at Mother's Day and Easter because they are so beautiful.  This plant is hardy to zones 4-9.  It needs the cold winter to go dormant and store energy for next year's bloom and growth.  You could grow it in a pot outdoors but it will not make a good houseplant.  To care for the plant outdoors the bulb must be planted 6 inches deep.  Side dress with well composted manure and make sure it gets adequate water although it will tolerate some drought.  It needs full sun to light shade.  If you're going to use it as a potted patio plant, make sure the pot is not exposed to cold, north winds.  You'll need to water the pot in the winter if there is no regular rain or snow.  I always water once a week if there is no regular precipitation.  I hope this helps.
Tom
