Questionthey are so beautiful. if i were to buy a plant now, how long can i keep it in my house before planting it in the ground. i live in northern new york state and i get a great deal of sun in the front of my house in the morning and early afternoon. that is where my little flower garden is and where i would like to plant the bulbs.thank you
AnswerHi Lorraine,
Thanx for your question. Generally, the colored callas only last a few weeks and then the foliage turns yellow and withers and the tubers go dormant for about 90 days. The plant re-emerges after that but the plant is not hardy in your area. It will not overwinter and so you would have to dig up the tubers and store them for the winter in a dry, cool, dark basement. The large white calla lilies (Zantedeschia aethiopica) will last all summer as do the taller yellow varieties. In your climate, the plant requires full sun for at least 6 hours. Keep the soil moist but not soggy. Amend the soil with some bone meal at the beginning of the growing season. I hope this helps.
