QuestionI have very healthy looking Peruvian lilies but this year they are not flowering very much. Do you have any suggestions?
AnswerHi Jeanne,
Thanx for your question. If you are feeding with high nitrogen fertilizer you should discontinue this as this will cause green growth and no blooms. If the plants are in the garden but drainage from lawn fertilizers is getting to the plants, the lawn fertilzers are high in nitrogen too and will cause green growth and no blooms. Side dress the plants with well composted cow or horse manure. If the clumps are too large and crowded, this can cause the plant not to bloom. Dig the clumps up in the fall when the plant goes dormant and separate the rhizomes. The rhizomes are brittle so be careful not to break them. Replant immediately. Keep the plant moist but not soggy. In warm climates, mulch the plant to keep the roots cool. The plant is not reliably hardy in zones cooler than Zone 6. Lift the plant in the fall and store the rhizomes in a dark, dry basement but make sure the rhizomes don't dry out, or use as potted plant. I hope this helps.
