Transplanting a clamatis

Question
I am moving & want to transplant my grandmothers purple clamatis to our new house. Both homes are within 12 miles of Green Bay,WI.54313 What would be the ideal time to move & can I move it right now?Suggestions on helping it survive the move besides prayer! Thank You soo much

Answer
Hi Jim,
Thanx for your question.  You should be close to your last frost date so I would say it is ok to transplant the clematis now.  When transplanting, make sure that the hole is large enough to comfortably accommodate the plant and that the plant is sitting about an inch lower than from where it came.  Put some composted-cow manure in the hole as an amendment.  Plant the clematis so it is comfortable and not cramped.  Tamp the soil down gently and then cover with a couple inches of compost.  Soak the entire plenting and it should be good to go.  I hope this helps.
Tom
