peony (unhealthry looking)

Question
4 yr old plant located at the end of an asparagus bed. My problem: This plant comes up every year looking like it has been under a pot without sun (yellow leaves with some pink to red) The leaves unfold like they are frozen. Each year the same thing happens. Is in full sun , has good drainage, and is in our vegetable garden. Would like to hear from you with a suggestion to what I might do to improve the beauty of the plant. The bloom is not the most beautiful. Have other peony plants that are very lovely. Thank you for you suggestions

Answer
Hi Irvanette,
Thanx for your question.  You stated that the plant is at the end of a vegetable bed.  Is there runoff from the vegetable bed of say fertilizer?  Some fertilizers could be causing this.  Are there any other peonies planted near this plant and they aren't doing the same thing?  Are doing any treatments of the soil around the plant like using herbicides or weed and feed in the lawn where there may be a danger or runoff?

Here are some Peony discussion links.  The only causes I can think of are chemical or fertilizer issues.

I hope this helps.
