my pretty pink calla lilies

Question
Hello!
I have a 12' potted calla lily plant that I want to keep alive and need your help to do so. Its in soil, but I am not sure about exposure to sun- Or how much to water. I know about root rot and this plant seems so sensitive to moisture. Can you help?

Answer
Hi Genevieve,
Thanx for your question.  This question has been answered a number of times and in the future you might save yourself some time and avail youself of the Search function and review past answers.  Callas are a popular potted plant but difficult for many people to keep alive.  The calla lily will eventually, fade and the flower will be spent and then the foliage will wither and disappear.  This is because once the calla lily finishes blooming it will go dormant and "rest" for about 3 months before coming back to life.  What do you need to do when this happens?  Stop watering and feeding the plant.  Place the pot in a cool (not freezing), dark, dry place for about 3 months.  Water only enough to keep the soil from drying completely out.  Make sure the pot is free-draining so you don't get root rot.  After three months, return the pot to a sunny window sill or a sill that gets at least 6 hours of sunlight per day.  Start watering the plant regularly and feed with some bone meal according to the directions on the package.  Any bulb food will work too.  The plant should begin emerging and the blooming cycle will start all over again.  You can also place the pot outdoors during the summer and the plant will thrive in most warm climates.  If it is really hot where you live, like the California desert or Southern Arizona, put the pot in a place where the plant will receive protection from the hot, afternoon sun.  I hope this helps.
Tom
