Zone 3 groundcover/rock plants

Question
Hi!  I need plants for two locations here in far north Minnesota (Zone 3).  Both areas are partial shade/partial sun.  And plants in both areas need to be deer resistant.

In the first spot, we have a 2' high rock wall and want to plant something to grow between the rocks. It needs to be easy to grow (maintenance free) and spread to help anchor the rocks.  We can tuck black dirt for it to grow in.  Any ideas?

The second spot is about 20 X 40 feet and on a slight slope.  The front half has been planted with Vinca which seems to be doing okay, but we want something taller in back.  Again, we want something low maintenance.  Am thinking about finding some ferns in the woods to transplant, but would appreciate other ideas.

And on top of that, we would love ideas to either start with seeds (start in the house?) or something we don't have to spend alot for...

Thanks in advance for your help!

Answer
Hi Judy,
I'm sorry it took so long to get back to you.  Here are some ideas you asked after.

Rockwall - rock cress, delosperma (hardy iceplant), frageria (wild strawberry), gypsophilla (baby's breath), saponaria (soapwort), saxifrage, sedum, sempervivum (hen and chicks), thyme.  Seed is usually available in most nurseries, on line and via mail order.

20X40 slight slope - purple coneflower, mints, catmint, columbine, Russian sage, sometimes you can get hosta seed thru ebay and hostas would be great for this.

I hope this helps.
Tom
