QuestionI got a small Calla lily around valentine's day. I noticed
some yellowing starting this week and in an attempt to save
the plant, have repotted it into a larger container w/
Miracle Grow potting soil.
What can I expect from this plant? I really don't want it
to die but it looks as if it has already started.
How often should I be watering it? I've placed it near my
back-door w/ the blinds open so it can get some sunlight,
but there's no place in my apartment for "direct sunlight".
What's the best way to take care of it? I live in NC
AnswerHi Elizabeth,
Thanx for your question. If the calla lily is not a white calla, it will eventually go dormant as soon as the plant has finished blooming. Don't worry. It's not dying it's just taking a rest after blooming. Eventually, the leaves with wither and disappear but the corm (a structure that is sort of like a bulb or tuber) will remain alive and store energy while the plant rests. Keep it in a cool, dark place and only water enough to keep the soil from drying out completely. After about 3 months, you can begin watering again and keep the plant warm and it will emerge and bloom again. Calla lilies and thrive in partial sunlight. Make sure the soil is moist but not soggy. I wouldn't feed it Miracle Gro anymore. Use bone meal following the directions on the package. You can renew the soil every year by mixing in some composted manure or just changing the soil completely once the corm is resting. I hope this helps.
