Hawaii

Question
Which flowers will not grow in Hawaii? Daisies? Snapdragons? Or will every kind of flower grow in Hawaii?

Answer
Hi Janet,
Thanx for your question.  Most perennials that grow on the Mainland require a dormant period.  This occurs in the winter when the sun is low in the sky and temperatures fall.  In fact, most perennials on the Mainland require a cold period from the chilly but not freezing short winters along the Gulf Coast and Coastal Southeastern U.S. to places like the Midwest, Great Lakes, New England, etc. where temperatures can go below zero.  These plants must have a cold period to rejuvenate and restore themselves for the next season's growth, bloom and seed production.  These plants will generally, not grow well if at all in Hawaii.  Most perennials from the Mainland require two seasons before they will bloom.  One season the grow a good green growth, a cold period to rest and rejuvenate and then the second year to bloom and produce seeds.  Annuals can be successfully grown in Hawaii and will die after they've either worn themselves out or gone to seed. The Master Gardeners of the Oahu Urban Gardeners Center can give you some excellent recommendations for what to grow in Hawaii.  Here is a link to that organization.  http://www.ctahr.hawaii.edu/ougc/
There are similar organizations on some of the neighbor islands and you can get to those from the Oahu link.

I hope this helps.
Tom
