re planting bouganvillas

Question
Is it possible to cut from my huge bougainvillea tree to re plant them into new pots without a new tree or seeds?

Answer
Hi Angela,
Thanx for your question.  In the spring, take 6" cuttings of green wood.  Cut them at the joint where a leaf meets the stem.  Dip this in a rooting hormone available at most nurseries.  Some folks say the cutting will root without the hormone.  Stick the cutting into a pot of warm, wet sand about one inch deep.  Keep the sand moist and warm.  I would seal the pot inside a clear plastic bag to maintain moisture.  Make sure you cutting only has a couple of leaves at the end of it and strip all the rest off.  The cutting shoudl root in 8 weeks or so.  Check by gently digging around the cutting.  When the cutting has sufficient roots, gently pot it in a separate pot with rich potting soil.  Be sure to place in the shade for 10 days before setting out in full sun, after there is no danger of frost and night temperatures are consistently above 50F.  I hope this helps.
Tom
