QuestionI have grown my first Calilily plant this year and have noticed a set of large pods that have come off the plant recently. Can these be used for planting and if so what is the procedure/s involved?
AnswerHi Al,
Thanx for your question. The pods you describe are probably seed pods and once they have dried and you can cut them off of the main plant, the seeds will resemble dried peas and will come off of the cone-like structure. These seeds can be planted about 1/2 inch deep and kept warm (75-80F) and they will germinate in 2-4 weeks. Keep the soil evenly moist but not soggy. Seedlings resemble new grass at first and have a high light requirement so keep them under 4-foot, 40W shop lights extended about 8 inches above the growing containers. If the seeds came from a hybrid, chances are more likely than not the resulting plants will not resemble the parent plant due to hybridizing. I hope this helps.
