seed pods on daylilies

Question
I have seed pods on my lilies. I wouid like to when to cut them off,how to store them, and when to start them? I live in northeast Ohio. And do I start them inside or outside?

Answer
Hi Dave,
Thanx for you question.  Some folks say start up whenever and others say to stratify.  I've done it both ways and for my time and money, I say stratify.  Pick the pods from the plant when they barely start to split open.  You will find the shiny black seeds inside.  Put the seeds inside a damp paper towel and stick this inside a plastic baggie and place in the freezer for 30 days. In January, sprinkle the seeds on top of soil in a pot and lightly cover with more soil.  Start the seeds indoors.  Keep the soil moist but well drained and not soggy.  Keep the surroundings warm (about 75F) and germination should occur in 3-4 weeks.  The seedlings will resemble grass.  When they are big enough to handle, gently prick them out and plant them in separate cells and keep them under 40-watt shop lights, suspended about 8 inches above.  In the spring, after the last frost, take the plants outdoors and keep them in a shady, protected place for about 10 days.  After that, plant in direct sun.  If these seeds are from hybrids, I doubt any of them will resemble the parent plant due to hybridization.  I hope this helps.
Tom
