QuestionI had to cut off the pods from my callas lilie plants. I would like to know how to store them and when and how to plant them.
AnswerHi Sue,
Thanx for your question. If you did not allow the pods to dry completely, the seed will not be ripe or viable. If you did allow the seed to ripen you may store them in a glass jar sealed or a plastic baggie and keep them in a cool, dark place. I would not start them until January or February. Plant 1/2 inch deep in a pot and keep warm. They will germinate in about 3-4 weeks and have a strong light requirement so you'll have to grow them under 40 watt shoplights suspended about 8 inches above them. When they are large enough to handle and after the last frost. Take them outdoors and put them in the shade for about 10 days. You can either plant them in a large planter or pot or plant them in the ground. If you get cold, frosty winters, you will have to dig up the corms in the fall before the first frost. Corm is the term used for the tuber-like growth from which the plant grows. I hope this helps.
