Question
Lucky Clovers Timeline
Hello Tom,
Last April, I purchased a Buzzy Seeds Lucky Clover Grow Kit containing three bulbs of what I've discovered are actually Oxalis deppei "Iron Cross". I was amazed when it quickly exploded in growth, requiring repotting several times in a few months. I now have it growing in an approximately 20" diameter x 16" deep plastic pot. We are already tasting the first touches of Autumn, and I don't really know how to care for this plant during cold weather.
I read that this plant's cold hardiness zone is 8 and above, but I am in zone 7b. Could I leave my Iron Cross plants in the pot this winter, or grow them in the ground if heavily mulched? Or should I dig the bulbs, clean them, and store them in a paper bag, like I do for my Elephant Ears? What would be my best option? Thank you so much for taking the time to help me out!
Sincerely,
James
AnswerHi James,
Thanx for your question. A lot of people safely grow plants rated for warmer zones. I've done it but, I never risk anything that I can't afford to lose. I think it would be so much easier just to dig these guys up and store them in a frost-free, cool, dark basement for the winter. Another thing you could try is to allow the plant to stay outdoors and start to go dormant as it gets cooler. Then keep the pot in a garage or shed where the soil in the pot won't freeze. Keep it watered as though it were outside though. After the last frost, bring the pot back outdoors. I hope this helps.
Tom
