calla lilly pest

Question
QUESTION: Tom, i have a green goddess calla lilly that has developed a weird parasite.  the "thing" is about 1/8" oval, olive green with brown spots, does not move although it looks like it has small white legs, and infests rapidly.  it is attacking both the top and underside of the plant.  it seams to have a hard shell but can be squished easily and has a mushy inside.  the plant has been kept indoors for the past year.  it is in a 16" pot which is sitting in a 20" tub which i keep a couple inches of water in.  got me scratching my head!
thanks for any help you may have.

ANSWER: Hi Joe,
Thanx for your question.  That is odd that it does not move.  Is there anyway you can send me a picture of it?  Sometimes aphids won't move around much.  Do you notice if this one is sucking the juices out of the plant (any leaf curl or brown spots where the pest has been).  Is the plant showing any symptoms as a result of this?  It may not even be a plant parasite but could be something else.  Spider mites are almost impossible to see without a magnifying glass so it can't be that.  Callas are pretty much pest free except for instances of fungal root rot.  My guess is, it's some kind of aphid. Use a horticultural soap available at most nurseries or hand pick if there are only a few.  I hope this helps.

QUESTION: does not appear to be sucking the juice out or any discernable movement.  the leaves have become quite "sweaty" though. not sure if that is coincedental or not.  i'll borrow my friends camera and take a pic to send you.  thank so much for your help.

ANSWER: Hi Joe,
Thanx for the additional information.  When you say sweaty, do you mean the leaves are moist?  Sticky?  Have light webbing on them?
thx,
Tom

QUESTION: very shiny and kind of sticky.  does not rub off.  like a layer of laquer.  does that help?

Answer
Hi Joe,
Thanx for the additional information.  This sounds like spider mites but you can't see them without a magnifying glass.  You could try a miticide on the plant.  The insect you described though is too large to be a spider mite.  If you can get a picture, that would be great because you have me stumped.  I'm sorry I couldn't help you.
Tom
