QuestionHow do I groom day lillies? I have several planted. They bloom at first and then they get "stalks" on them and buds but don't bloom again. Do I "deadhead" them like geraniums, cut them back to make them bloom again, or just cut off the dry stalks?
AnswerHi Cheryl,
Thanx for your question. Deadhead Stella D'oros as soon as they have finished blooming to encourage reblooming. You don't want them to start setting seed (forming seedpods) because this tells the plant that it has reproduced and it will beging shutting down preparing for the fall and going dormant for the winter. Do not cut back any foliage until it starts to yellow. Foliage continues to gather energy from the sun to make starches and sugars to be stored in the rhizomes for next year's growth. This same thing applies to other daylilies too. I hope this helps.
