QuestionQUESTION: I have three healthy plants that are in their second year. They are being crowded out by a hydrangea. When is the best time to transplant them. Their blooms are finished for this season.
ANSWER: Hi Carol,
Thanx for your question. I would transplant them around the end of August or the first part of September. A rule of thumb is to transplant when you have at least 30-45 days before the first frost. I hope this helps.

QUESTION: Should I cut the blue star sea holly way back before I transplant? And I understand that the root is very deep.
Thanks
AnswerHi Carol,
Thanx for your question. Yes, the blue star holly (eryngium) has a long tap root so dig as deep as you can to recover as much of it as possible. I would cut the plant back to a manageable size but not all the way down to the ground or too short. I hope this helps.
