huckleberries?

Question
I live in Tennessee,in zone 7. Our soil type is clay mix.
Would the evergreen huckleberry be able to grow here? I wanted to buy a few of the plants. Also,I have some red oak trees in my yard,so it's partly shaded. What kind of fertilizer would you give them, and how do you prepare the soil?
                          Thanks, Annette Forbes

Answer
Hi Annette,
Thanx for your question.  Huckleberries are not frost hardy but will self-seed in frost areas.  When the berries are green they are poisonous.  Grow huckleberries like you would tomatoes and peppers because they're all in the same family and have the same requirements; warm weather, frost-free, good rains, sunny.  They not going to be as productive in a shady yard.  They'll grow but they won't produce much unless they get about 6 hours of full sun per day.
Use a 5-10-10 fertilizer which is lower on the nitrogen and higher on the potassium and phosphorus.  I hope this helps.
Tom
