QuestionWe just built a house and the soil has a VERY high clay content. Are there any blooming perennials that will grow in it?
AnswerHi Sue,
Thanx for your question. I have clay all over the place and yes, there are tons of things that will grow in it. Just keep adding composted cow manure, leaves, pine needs, grass clippings and eventually you will build up a decent soil. For now though, you can plant just about any kind of perennial you want and they'll grow but they'll grow better with the addition of the organic material I described above. Some plants that are especially hardy in clay?
Purple coneflowers, Shasta daisy, holly hock, hardy hibiscus, spiderwort (can run away and be invasive), daylilies, iris, coreopsis, peonies, hosta, blue flax, baptisia, oriental lilies, tiger lilies, black-eyed Susan, poppies, achillea.
I hope this helps.
Tom
