moving rose of sharon bush

Question
My mother-in-law has a large rose of sharon bush that we need to move. Right now it is on the east side of her mobile home, the home is being replaced and I want to move the bush out of the way while the old home is being pulled out and the site is prepared for the new one. This includes digging out what is there and putting down concrete. She enjoys the bush watching the humming birds and butterflies that visit the many blooms, so I want to try to get it out of the way and then put it back by the kitchen window when everything is done, and not kill it.

Answer
Hi Lisa,
Thanx for your question.  Trim the shrub back severely so it will be easier to handle.  Make sure you check with local utilities in case there are buried pipes, electricity conduits, etc.  Dig deeply so you get a large rootball.  Put it in a large tub and keep it in the shade and keep the soil moist but free-draining.  Plant the shrub as soon as you can and soak it with water.  Be sure this is all done at least 30 days before the first frost.  This is going to stress it out but it should survive just the same.  Next year, it will send out new growth and bloom some and the second year it should be back to normal.  I hope this helps.
Tom
