QuestionShould foxgloves be deadheaded? When should you prune them back. I live in southeast Michigan. I was told my foxgloves are perennials will they come back? thanks, Mary
AnswerHi Mary,
Thanx for your question. Some foxgloves are short-lived perennials and many are biennials. The difference? Short-lived perennials will live for an average of about 3-5 years before they disappear. Biennials produce green growth the first year, bloom the second year and die. That is why it is important to allow both to self-seed, so, don't deadhead them until the blooms have completed dried. Then, shake the blooming stalk vigorously to disperse the seed and then you can cut it off at the base of the plant. You may cut the stalk off at any time after the blooming if you like but you won't get any seed if you don't allow it to ripen. I hope this helps.
