peony plant with no flower

Question
I have a peoy plant that give tons of foliages every year, but it never had any flowers. What do you think the problem is and what can i do for it?

Answer
Hi Shahin,
Thanx for your question.  First of all, the plant benefits from at least 6 hours of direct sunlight per day.  If you are fertilizing with a balanced or high nitrogen fertilizer, stop.  High Nitrogen fertilizers will result in almost all green growth and no flowers.  If the plant was dug up and moved in the last 2-3 years, you will most likely either not get blooms or very poor blooming.  Peonies resent movement and although they recover quickly they hold back on blooming.  Use fertilizers that are high in potassium (K) and phosphorus (P) and low in nitrogen (N).  Peonies are very tough and tolerate drought, high temps and low temps quite well.  They have always been prolific bloomers and are one of the few perennials that do not benefit from division.  You can find peony shrubs that have been growing in the same place for 60+ years!  I hope this helps.
Tom
