QuestionHi,
I just wanted to know how best to train a bouganvilla to grow through a lattice? Should I keep it tied to a post or let it go free then put it through the lattice?
AnswerDebra,
I don't have any hands-on experience with this plant but in my research of my books it is recommended that vine supports be constructed from sturdy, durable materials. Always use treated lumber for outdoor structures. Redwood, cedar and cypress are particularly durable in the outdoor environment. A wood preservative/water seal applied after construction will also help prolong the life of the structure. Wrought iron also makes an excellent support. Use aluminum or copper wire to attach plants because it is resistant to rusting.
Putting up lattice and using wire to train would be great. You can also help the new growth to weave in and out of the lattice. I think it would be beautiful with that backdrop of lattice, painted or stained.
