QuestionI live in Tucson AZ and would like to know how to care for a dwarf Alstroemeria and further can it survive our summers planted in the ground.
AnswerHi Carlo,
Thanx for your question. I believe Tucson is in USDA Zone 8 so the dwarf alstroemeria should be reliably hardy here. The problem is the summertime. Put the alstroemeria where it will get some shade from the blazing afternoon heat (I lived in Phoenix many years ago and remember the summers!). Make sure you water them well 3 times a week and mulch them to keep the rhizomes cool. Feed with a balanced fertilizer 12-12-12 at the beginning of the season, later, use fertilizers less in Nitrogen and more in Potassium and Phosphorus. I hope this helps.
