QuestionCan you please tell me what to feed my daylillies. They are very healthy looking and get bigger and bigger each year. However, I don't feel that they bloom as much as they should - can you please advise what to feed them?
Thank you
Muriel
AnswerThey don't need food, my friend. Your Daylilies need to be divided, and possibly they need more Sun.
It may be too late in the Spring depending on where you live. If you are not gardening in the South, you can attempt this, asap, before further growth is underway. When Daylily clumps get big, they must be divided to continue blooming. The U.S. Nat'l Arboretum posts step by step instructions on this very simple task:

Cut the foliage down to 6-8 inches tall. Not only will this be easier to work with, but there will be less shock to the plants from transpiration through the long leaves. The USNA recommends using a pitchfork, and getting as much of the rootball as possible, then using a second pitchfork to separate the plants within the rootball. Quite easy and blessedly quick.
Replant the divided roots immediately and water well.
The American Hemerocallis Society has a lot of information on Daylilies and daylily news. Check out their FAQ's page:

Easy as pie!
Thanks for writing.
