summer monkshood

Question
the monkshood i planted 3 years ago comes up very spindly maybe 2 stems never blooms about 6 or 7 feet high i have never had this happen could you advise me what to do

Answer
That is a good question... I'm going to need more information to properly answer this question.  Where are you located?  What is the environment the plant is in? Shade?  Moist soils?  Dry soils?  How often do you fertilize it?

Over fertilization can prevent blooming and allows for more vegetative growth but too much fertilizer can cause spindly growth.  Application of fertilizer should be done only every few years with most perennials.  Try using some timed release fertilizers such as Osmocote, these are low doses and last for about 3 months at a time.  You sprinkle the granules on top of the soil bed around the plant and the irrigation or natural rain will pull it into the soil.  These plants prefer shade to part shade but part sun may be good for the plant to flower.  Good well drained soils are a must to many plants, Colorado, where I'm from, has very clayey soils and most areas need to be amended with peat and maybe a touch of sand or pea gravel depending on the drainage needed.  Also, if you live in a wetter climate, your soils will be more acidic than the alkaline soils out west.  Once you update me with more info on where the plant is and its environment I can advise you more about some steps you can take to make this plant turn to something you are happy with.

thanks,
Jason
