QuestionI am located in N.E. Iowa and this was the first winter for our hummingbird garden. I am wondering what should be done this spring to enhance growth. We have Wild Romance Aster, Mixed Monarda, Keys of Heaven, White Dragonflower, Red Penstemon and a Black Knight Butterfly Bush. I didn't cut them back or anything last fall. Should I have?
AnswerHi Terry,
Thanx for your question. I would go ahead and tidy up the garden by removing all of the dead growth. Side dress the plants with a cured cow or horse manure. This should be all you'll need for good growth. Make sure they get consistent water, about 1 inch a week. Keep the plants from getting crowded by dividing them every three years. I hope this helps.
