QuestionI have two Hydranga plants that I planted three years ago. The first year a had many flowers on my plants but the past two summers I have not had one flower on either plant. The first year I cut the plants down in the fall and thought that maybe that was my problem so the next year I left it alone until spring and then I cut back only the dead part left after winter and I still didn't get any flowers. This past fall I again left the plant alone and now I need to know what I should do this spring to get flowers on my plants. Thank you, Valene
AnswerFirst, my friend, you must put away the pruning shears. Hydrangeas should never be pruned that late. You lop off all the next season's flowers when you do that.
Next, can you give me an idea of how much Sun these plants are getting? Hydrangeas do not do well in deep Shade.
Generous Soil Amending will improve your Soil and raise the performance level of your plant. And liquid fertilizer feedings of Fish Emulsion Fertilizer will encourage Bacteria and other positives for your flower-building Soil. I used to recommend Superphosphate years ago to boost my blooms until I discovered that we don't get much in that department. Boost your Soil instead. Best regards,
