QuestionHello, I just planted some anemones, and found out they are poisonous to animals. Do you know how much of the plant needs to be ingested before 'hurting' a cat? And, do you know of any way to keep cats out of the garden?
Thank you.
AnswerHi Emily,
Thanx for your question. Most cats are prudent enough that they will avoid harful plants. Many cats will eat grass but this is normal.
The entire anemone plant is toxic. It is irritating to the mucous membranes and often causes blisters to form after it is chewed. If it is ingested entirely, hemorrhagic gastroenteritis can occur, which can lead to shock, convulsions, and death. If your pet ingests anemone, administer activated charcoal and see the vet immediately.
The website I found the article above did not say how much the cat would need to injust but I would imagine any amount ingested would pose a serious problem. Like I said, most cats do not much on most plants.
I cannot think of a way to totally cat-proof a garden other than to totall enclose it.
I hope this helps.
Tom
