QuestionI live in Georgetown KY. I plant Elephant Ear bulbs this spring. They grew very large, healthy and beautiful. Now that its fall and winter is coming, do I have do dig up the bulbs.
I also planted Sweet potatoes vines. also grew extremely well. We had a few days of of 30 degree weather and frost. they begin to die. so I ripped them out this morning. They had tuber on them. Can I plant the tubers in a pot and keep them in the garage until mid spring next year?

AnswerThose Elephants MUST be lifted out of Kentucky gardens to survive the winter. Sweet Potatoes are also tender plants, very sensitive to frost. I admit I have not over-wintered one, so I cannot tell you if they would respond better to pot-storage or if you get better results dusting them off, Dahlia-style, and storing them dry in the basement. I do believe your garage will be way too cold -- these plants don't like cool temps. Find a warmer, drier space where they won't rot or wither and provide occasional moisture through winter to keep them going. Come Spring, you should see new growth; start early on the windowsill to push your yield. Good luck. (This is something I should do next year -- I LOVE Sweet Potatoes. Thanks for the idea!)
