columbines that dont bloom

Question
QUESTION: I have some columbines in my garden that bloom in the late spring- and while those are blooming - in another sunny area, there are some that are just beginning. Now, in late August - this second batch is fully grown- with no flowers- mass is about 2 1/2 feet wide and 1 1/2 foot long with no flowers- what happened and what should I do for next year?

ANSWER: Hi Marie,
Thanx for your question.  What is your location?  I live in Kansas and my columbines bloomed from Spring into the summer.  Sometimes an occasional bloom could be found in August and September.  This is not unusual.  Now, if your columbines don't bloom at all there could be a number of reasons.  Has it been unusually cool?  Maybe it has been too shady.  Has it been unusually hot?  Like I said before, the primary time for columbines to bloom is late Spring to early summer depending upon your location.  If you can provide me with some additional info as to your growing conditions it might help me answer your question.
thx
Tom

QUESTION: it is in a sunny location. WHne the others in my garden bloomed - these were just aobut 3-4 inches high- they have been a tall as the others now with no blooms. I t was very hot for about 2 weeks- but that was after the blooming time expected.  They are not in shade adn they are watered as often as the ones that bloom.

Answer
Hi Marie,
I asked you for your location and I meant, where are YOU located (in what state, country, province, etc.).  Sorry for the misunderstanding.  Much of the U.S. had a late cold spell that caused many plants to perform less than normal this year.  That could have caused some plants not to bloom.  Also, if these are first year plants, if they were planted this year or came up from seed this year, they may not bloom.  Many perennials respond this way.  It doesn't sound like there is any other reason for them not to bloom.  I don't think there is anything you can do but let them come back next year and see what happens.  They should bloom fine next year.  I'm sorry I couldn't give you anything better.
