irish moss

Question
Some of my Irish moss is turning brown and dying.  I've tried everything from over watering to almost neglect. It is planted in a partly sunny area.  It gets approximately 4 hours of afternoon sun.  Some of the Irish moss I've planted in the same spots are doing fine while others are dying.  Any suggestions.

Answer
Hi Cindy,
Thanx for your question.  I tried to grow this stuff a few years ago.  I know the places that sell it say it is rated for zones 4-10 but this plant hates hot weather and will go dormant only to come back when it gets cooler.  You can't overwater it but you can't allow it to dry out either.  Either way, the plant will start dying in patches.  It likes direct sun but also does well in partial shade.  I know it doesn't do well here in Kansas with out 100 degree hot and humid summers.  It did okay during the cooler periods but I lost it right when it started getting hot.  One reference I read stated that if the soil doesn't drain well, the roots get waterlogged and the plant dies in patches.  If you do not water it regularly when rain is not consistent this will kill it.  I think this is an alpine plant that doesn't do well in non-alpine conditions, particularly in areas that get hot and humid in the summer.  I know this probably isn't what you wanted to hear.
thx,
Tom
